THE 4th WALL BREAKER

You're friendly neighbourhood 'Merc with a mouth' stormed the box office in 2016 with a massive $783,112,979. A film many of us never thought would be on screen ever since the character was destroyed by Fox, the first time around in 'X-men origins: wolverine', but Deadpool's regenerative powers didn't just help him survive that 2009 disaster of a film, he came back stronger than ever. Deadpool's success is partially due to the unique style of the film, for a comic book fan it was almost like reading the pages of a comic book, and the character that I had met in the books was finally on the big screen in front of me talking to me as if I'm right there in the action with him.

'Hey, you realise this blog's about me, right?

Ryan Reynolds own this character from the get go and it is clear that the team who worked on the film had a pretty good handle on the character as well as a lot of freedom to be experimental which defiantly worked in favour of the film. As the character does in the the comics he was notorious for breaking the 4th wall throughout the film (fourth wall breaking - is essential when a character acknowledges the view). From the off the film broke the forth wall and made reference to other films and characters. Intertextuality being a huge part of this film's success, where it even created some of the funnies moments within the film.

With nods to DC's 2011 flop Green Lantern, the X-men origins: wolverine's version of Deadpool, intertextuality was a key part of the film and is defiantly something that will stick throughout this film series or at least viewers hope so.

types of intertextuality, as i have said this film ran with the fundamental use of intertextuality but there are many ways in which the film did this

bricolage - is a form of intertextuality which is used within minutes of the film, this is a way of using already existing products, i.e deadpool is wearing an adventure time watch and is also used to references a plethora of movies i.e when a comparison is made Negasonic warhead and Ripley from alien 3.

parody - consists of a media product making fun of pre-existing media products

homage - is when an existing media product is used sincerely and respectfully into a new media product. there we many homages to other properties one that stood out the most for me was the end credit scene which was a extremely copy of the end credit scene of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). In this scene deadpool also references the marvel universe by saying “what were you expecting? Sam Jackson in an eye patc and a saucy little leather number” which is exactly what happened at the end of iron man.

pastiche - is the way in using imitation of existing media products, such as the scene in which dead pool is about to chop his own hand off, and turns to camera and says, “ever seen 127 hours, spoiler alert”. This was a direct imitation of the scene which was used for comedic affect.

in fact all of these were used in the film for comedic affect and it worked on many levels it allowed the witty merc. To stand out more when breaking the 4th wall and also helped the character become more relatable with the audience.

but that’s just a little for what I had to say on deadpool anything that intrestes you about this article message me.
